Survival

I really don't like the term, "survivor" - kinda funny that I'm saying that considering my blog is about my "survival story". In retrospect, I wish I would have called it Susan's Warrior Story - but, that doesn't sound quite right. I've learned from my colleagues at Brock Media (publishing magazines for 33 years now) that alliteration is much more catchy.

Aren't we all "survivors" simply by being human? I don't feel any more special because I've had a disease. Everyone has a story and everyone has survived something crazy in his/her life. It's only a matter of perspective whether my story is more gut-wrechingly sad than another persons story.

I've known people who have been homeless, who have experienced death, marital break-ups, mental illness, and with the challenges of raising children who are diagnosed with something. People who have been blind, deaf and handicapped. THIS IS LIFE! I'd be curious what the statistics are for humans with no suffering in his/her life vs everyone else. I guarantee, it's a small number.

So, don't call me a "survivor" ... I'm a girl who has had a bad year fighting a disease. Believe me when I say, things could be MUCH worse, and frankly it is for a whole lotta people out there.
